Japan, beautifully paced
Japan’s transport is efficient, but the trip still needs breathing room. Neighbourhood choices, luggage planning and the order of each day matter more than collecting cities.
Give each city a clear role
Tokyo rewards neighbourhood exploration, Kyoto concentrates heritage and Osaka offers an easygoing food culture. A first route can include all three if Tokyo and Kyoto receive real time and Osaka is not treated as another full monument list.
Forward the large bag
A ryokan night is calmer with a small overnight case. Luggage forwarding between major hotels is common and gives you freedom on station stairs, local trains and check-in days. Confirm delivery timing before packing medication or essentials.
Use early hours selectively
Not every day needs a dawn start. Reserve it for one or two places where crowd levels transform the experience, then balance the day with a garden, craft visit or quiet meal rather than another headline site.
Price the rail you actually use
The nationwide pass is no longer an automatic answer. Compare the long-distance sectors, seat reservations and local journeys in your real itinerary. Simpler point-to-point tickets may cost less and fit better.
Leave a little space for the day you could not have planned.
