Spiti: road-ready, altitude-aware
Spiti’s beauty is inseparable from altitude, weather and difficult roads. Preparation does not remove uncertainty; it makes better decisions possible when conditions change.
Prefer gradual altitude gain
Approaching through Kinnaur takes longer but gives the body more time before Kaza. No itinerary can guarantee protection from altitude illness, so symptoms, rest and medical advice must take priority over sightseeing.
Understand the comfort level
Long drives, simple stays, cold nights and intermittent hot water are normal. Ask for the exact vehicle seating, room heating and bathroom arrangement before deciding whether the route matches you.
Plan for weak connectivity
Carry cash, offline identification, insurance information and essential contacts. Tell family and work that silence may mean no network, not an emergency.
Accept the captain’s route call
A pass, lake road or high village may close with little notice. Experienced operations teams need authority to reroute without debating a photo checklist.
Leave a little space for the day you could not have planned.
