VALLEYS, LAKES & HIGH COUNTRY

Kashmir

Kashmir changes character with altitude and season. The strongest routes balance Srinagar’s layered culture with one or two valleys, leaving enough flexibility for weather and local transport rules.

WHEN TO GO

Choose the season for your kind of trip.

April–May suits blossom and cool gardens; June–September opens alpine meadows; October brings crisp colour. Winter is atmospheric but requires flexible road and activity plans.

ROUTE LOGIC

Fewer stops. Better days.

Give Srinagar two nights, Pahalgam or Aru two nights and Gulmarg two nights. Day-tripping every valley creates long car days and little contact with place.

PLACES IN CONTEXT

How the destination fits together.

01

Srinagar

Stay one night on a well-managed houseboat, then explore old-city craft, gardens and food beyond Dal Lake.

02

Pahalgam & Aru

Use Aru for meadow walks and Pahalgam for riverside comfort. Routes should match fitness and current trail conditions.

03

Gulmarg

Plan gondola and snow activities around operations, not fixed promises. A mountain guide adds safety and context.

04

Sonamarg

Best added when the onward route or a two-night stay justifies the drive; it should not be a hurried checkbox.

WHY GO

What makes Kashmir worth travelling for.

01

Valleys with different character

Srinagar’s lake life, Pahalgam’s river country and Gulmarg’s alpine terrain deserve distinct time rather than repeated day trips.

02

Four-season landscapes

Blossom, summer meadow, autumn colour and winter snow each create a different trip with different access realities.

03

Living craft traditions

Textiles, woodwork and papier-mâché become meaningful with makers who explain materials, labour and contemporary challenges.

ROUTE OPTIONS

Match the route to the time you actually have.

5 days

Srinagar + one valley

Use the city and lake as one base, then choose Pahalgam or Gulmarg according to season.

7 days

Srinagar + Pahalgam + Gulmarg

The classic route, with at least one flexible alpine day and no same-day airport dash from the mountains.

10 days

Add Aru or Sonamarg

A slower village or meadow stay adds depth; it works better than another long day excursion.

AT A GLANCE

Plan with the practical picture in view.

Typical trip length6–8 days for three distinct bases
Daily rhythmWeather-led alpine mornings and unhurried cultural afternoons
Getting aroundPrivate intercity car plus local union transport where required
Budget contextSeason, room heating, union vehicles and snow activities can materially change price

TRAVEL WITH CONTEXT

Culture, food and responsible choices.

Hospitality

Houseboats and family tables can be highlights, but exact facilities and access should be checked rather than assumed.

Food

Wazwan has ceremonial context; smaller home meals, breads and tea traditions add a more everyday view.

Photography

Ask permission in markets, workshops and residential areas, especially where travel intersects with security checks.

PRACTICAL NOTES

What thoughtful travellers know.

  • Keep photo ID ready and follow local advisories.
  • Union transport rules vary by valley.
  • Carry layers and rain protection in every season.
  • Build road buffers before flights, especially in winter.
